Город на северо-востоке штата Алабама. 24,2 тыс. жителей (2000), в МСА Аннистон [Anniston MSA (MSA)] 112,2 тыс. жителей. Административный центр [ county seat] округа Кэлхун [Calhoun County] (с 1898). Расположен в районе добычи железной руды в предгорьях Аппалачей [ Appalachian Mountains] (первое предприятие появилось в этих местах в 1863 для организации поставок Армии Конфедерации [ Confederate Army] и было разрушено северянами в конце Гражданской войны [ Civil War]). Производство первичных металлов и металлоизделий, текстильная промышленность, деревообработка, производство продуктов питания, стекла. Среди достопримечательностей - городской музей естественной истории [Anniston Museum of Natural History] (известное собрание птиц). В пригороде - база Форт Макклеллан [ Fort McClellan] (1912-95), Аннистонский военный склад [Anniston Army Depot]. Аннистон основан в 1872 представителями железорудной компании "Вудсток айрон" [Woodstock Iron Company] и первоначально назывался Вудсток, вплоть до 1883 был закрытым городом, предназначенным только для работников компании. Переименован в "Городок Энни" [Annie's Town] в честь Энни Тэйлор [Taylor, Annie], жены президента компании; статус города с 1879. -
